Connecting your team with their purpose could be the key to resilience
A recent global study by HBR revealed that 90% of people would trade 20% of their income for meaning and purpose. The same study found that meaning and purpose are crucial to organisational success. Estimates suggest that the increase in productivity when staff find their work meaningful results in a $9K p.a. increase in revenue per person.
And it doesn’t stop there. When leaders are connected with their purpose there is:
✅ Increased engagement
✅ Improved workplace culture
✅ A high chance for organisations to be an Employer of Choice in a highly competitive market
When we think of purpose, it’s common to look only at personal benefits. But the fact is that when leaders connect with their purpose, and use it to guide their leadership, businesses flourish.
In a 2021 Gartner study, researchers found that the global pandemic has had a profound impact on how staff relate to work. 65% of respondents strongly agree that the uncertainty of the last few years has caused them to rethink the place that work should have in their lives. In further research, 70% of employees are rethinking their purpose because of the pandemic – and staff who “live their purpose at work” are 6.5 times more likely to exhibit high levels of resilience.
Astute CPOs and CEOs know that in the current environment, where everything is still so uncertain, teaching leaders how to deeply connect with and articulate their leadership purpose is the best way to help them navigate difficult situations.
Last week I assisted an executive team to uncover and articulate their individual leadership purposes. I then helped to “operationalise” this, so that they lead on purpose every day. The result? Research shows that this team is set to experience increased wellbeing, a deeper sense of fulfilment, and more joy in their work.
Why? Because they now have a guiding principle to direct them in their leadership, firmly grounded in their own unique gifts. The ancient yogis called this Dharma, which lies at the intersection of what the world needs right now, and your innate strengths.
